Geo. A. Kelson Company Ltd. is an integral part of the team for design development, costs analysis, RFP, procurement, scheduling, quality control and risk analysis for the responsibility of the mechanical scope.

William Osler Health Care Facility is a design build project with a mechanical value of $120 million that needed to be completed in 30 months from start to finish. The project was broken down into 4 major buildings: Dialysis Treatment (DT), Inpatient (IP), Central Utility Plant (CUP), and Parking structure. Each building was then treated as a separate project with a project manager and team to complete each section. A project manager was also assigned to oversee the mechanical consultants to ensure that engineering deliverables met the construction schedule. A project manager was then assigned to oversee the entire project and communicate between the design team and the area project managers. This infrastructure then met regularly through the duration of the project in the head office with all sub trades to ensure that schedule, quality and final turnover was on schedule.

With so many activities happening at the same time on such a large project over a large construction area, Kelson had a full time schedule review resource dedicated to ensuring we were always on schedule. With the aid of our prefabrication facility, CAD interference drawings and trade meetings, Kelson never lost focus on the end objective of turning the building over to the owner. These internal audits are part of our quality control to ensure that we are on track at all times.

Kelson was responsible for commissioning the project and delivering it to a third party commissioning agent for verification. Recognizing this requirement from the time of submission, Kelson assembled a 20 man team to document, start up and commission the mechanical systems. Kelson recognized early that the need to assemble such a team lead to the proactive approach to successfully complete this task.

The new William Osler Health Care Centre facility is 1,300,000 square feet; has 608 acute care beds and 18 operating rooms; it will accommodate 90,000 emergency visits, 160,000 ambulatory care visits and 4,250 births each year.

In addition to paving the way for advanced health care, the hospital is the largest health care infrastructure project in Canada and is one of the first Greenfield hospitals to be built in this century.
