Beginning in the spring of 1998, the transformation of the highway 7 and 400 drive-in theatre began. One IMAX theatre and twenty theatres of varying sizes were built to have the appearance of a space ship. The round pod on the centre roof has two wings off of it that house the theatres. The centre pod serves as the entrance, facilitating the IMAX theatre, concessions and a second floor bar area. This centre area was very challenging as the bar and concessions are built in a circle. All pipe and duct were bent in a circle to match the radius of the counters. All exposed pipes or ducts were installed to look like they were parts of a space ship.
- Heating and cooling is all supplied from the 27 rooftop units that are ducted into the theatres. The entire exposed duct is insulated
and clad with aluminum; again this gives the appearance of
silver tentacles feeding the space pod.
- Some of the systems include underground drains, rainwater leaders, refrigeration, water pipes and specialty water filtration
for concession use.
- Hoisting and placement of twenty seven Air Handling Units,
wiring start-up and commissioning.
Kelson Highlights:
- Mechanical requirements to run the IMAX projectors
- The custom fabrication of materials to help with the effects of the space ship and maintaining its function.
